As a nation,
we continue to learn life lessons about how to live in harmony, and how to
honor and preserve our personal and collective history. Derek
Donovan’s The Chilling Story Behind Liberty Memorial’s North Wall Frieze,
available in the Autumn 2002 JOURNAL by of the Jackson County Historical
Society, provides
an excellent example of how such challenges have been met. The recent
renovation of the Liberty Memorial, the nation’s only memorial specifically
dedicated to the memory of World War I, was not without controversy. This short article, by Derek
Donovan, director of research and information at The Kansas City Star
and author of Lest the Ages Forget: Kansas City’s Liberty Memorial (Kansas
City Star Books), details an older controversy that was successfully
resolved. Derek also writes
frequently for the Kansas City Star, contributing theater, music and arts
reviews and features. Before he came to The Star, he worked as a scenic and
lighting designer, and he holds a master’s degree in theater history, theory
and criticism. He lives in Kansas City, Missouri.
