We owe
many thanks to Ted Stillwell for “herding” up information on Jackson County’s
cattle and dairy farm legacy in Corralling Jackson County’s Prized Polled
Hereford and Family Run Dairy Farm History, available in the Autumn 2002
JOURNAL of the Jackson County Historical Society. It may
come as a revelation to many that much of the beef Americans eat today comes
from cattle whose predecessors were sired in Jackson County. And what ever
became of the 500 dairies that operated in Jackson County, Missouri? Find out in this article that
includes personal recollections of Raymond Paschall, formerly of Pashall
Dairy. Columnist
Ted W. Stillwell writes a weekly column every Wednesday in The
Independence Examiner called “Portraits of the Past” about the history
and folklore of eastern Jackson County. Stillwell has written two books of
the same title. In addition to being a writer and historian, Stillwell is a
mural artist. Several of his murals are on mounted in Independence at The
Examiner’s offices, the Courthouse Exchange restaurant, The Roger T.
Sermon Community Center, and The Fairmount United Methodist Church. His most
recent creation is located at the J.C. Penney Birthplace Memorial Park in
Hamilton, Missouri. Contact Mr. Stillwell via e-mail at:
