The impetus for our lead article Enemy Soldiers in American Soil: When WWII POWs Camped in Jackson County, Missouri, started with the generous donation to the Society of a set of snapshots (one reproduced above) taken by a fellow Jackson County resident--Doris Milano--and the recollections of her neighbors when POWs lived and mingled with their families.  We’re happy Mr. Fiedler has recounted this Jackson County story and hope it will encourage others to begin counting their own stories worth recording.

David Fiedler's new book The Enemy Among Us: German and Italian POWs in Missouri during World War II is about the prisoner of war camps in Missouri during World War II. The Missouri Historical Society Press released his book this autumn, and Jackson County POWs are figured prominently in the text.

David Fiedler will be visiting Kansas City and delivering a presentation about his book to the Society’s Roger “T.” Sermon, Jr. History Series on Wednesday, October 13, 2004. A book signing will follow. Mr. Fiedler lives in St. Louis and posts information about his book and tour schedule on his website http://MoPOWs.tripod.com.
