Contributed by David W. Jackson

The Autumn 2004 JOURNAL of the Jackson County Historical Society features Unlocking the Shackled Past of Jackson County’s Jail in Independence by David W. Jackson

This year the Jackson County Historical Society is also celebrating 45 years of ownership and operation of the 1859 Jail, Marshal’s Home and Museum. Unlocking the Shackles of Jackson County’s Jail in Independence is the second installment in this year’s observation of this impressive benchmark. The article provides a relatively comprehensive look at the jail and Marshal’s home built on Independence Square in 1859 and threatened with demolition in 1959.

Since November 2000, David W. Jackson has served the Jackson County Historical Society as director of archives and education, and JOURNAL editor. He directs more than 20 volunteers who help with a multitude of tasks in the administration of the various functions of the Archives; non-circulating Research Library; physical and online Bookshops; Truman Office and Courtroom tours; and, educational programs that include a speaker’s bureau, lecture series, and website improvement and maintenance.
