  • Truman Library Institute 500 West US Highway 24 Independence, MO, 64050 United States (map)

Robert Klara is a longtime magazine editor and writer who specializes in uncovering the overlooked and forgotten facets of American history.  Klara is the author of FDR's Funeral Train, The Hidden White House, and The Devil's Mercedes.

This free program at the Truman Library in Independence, MO is preceded by a wine reception at 6:00 p.m. and includes a book signing.  Copies of Robert Klara's The Hidden White House will be available for purchase at the Truman Museum Store.  The program begins at 6:30 p.m.

When the Trumans moved into the White House in 1945, the building was in danger of collapse.  Years of neglect, patchwork fixes, and retrofitting left the 150-year-old executive mansion in a state of structural failure.  In November 1948, the Trumans moved out of the White House, making room for a massive renovation to begin.
